| Having a baby is an exciting time, but it is also a time when the body undergoes many changes. Pregnancy changes hormones, releases Relaxin which affects all the major joints, causes low back pain, and strains the pelvic floor. Having a baby is wonderful, but the process pushes the body to extremes. Pilates is a gentle form of exercise that can help in multiple ways:
Pilates is a great option for nearly everyone. After delivery, Pilates works all the major muscles that have been strained or that are being used in new ways. Pilates retrains the abdominal and pelvic floor muscles. Many exercises incorporate the muscles of the shoulder girdle, which will be engaged in lifting a growing baby and breast feeding. As with any form of exercise, you should always consult your doctor before beginning a new exercise regime or when your become pregnant. |

| After having undergone surgery or chemotherapy for breast cancer, Pilates can serve as a form of stress relief and relaxation. Pilates tenderly retrains muscles that have been effected. Multiple modifications are available to clients as they rebuild their muscles. Attending a Pilates class can be a great way to take some much deserved time for yourself and your body. It is a wonderful way to heal. Rehabilitative group classes can provide a support network of individuals with similar situations. | In general Pilates is a great way to recover from any injury. The exercises work the shoulder girdle, hip joint, and back in ways that strengthen the muscles while retaining motion and movement within the joint. The emphasis on core muscles (stomach, back, and gluts) help to stabilize the body. You learn to be in control of your muscles. What makes Pilates unique is that every exercise can be modified to meet your individual needs. Pilates is a great choice while on the road to recovery after almost any surgery or injury. Talk to your doctor about doing Pilates and whether or not it is the right exercise for you. At Personal Euphoria we have a number of clients who began taking Pilates classes because their doctor recommended it. They continue because they see and feel the difference. |
| "Thank you so much for your encouragement, support, and dedication. It was somewhat intimidating at first to get back into an exercise routine just six weeks after having a baby--but you made it fun and I have taken so much from our one-hour sessions." --Kathleen Neama (Photos Above: Kathleen Neama 6 Months Pregnant and Kathleen and Lily at 6 months.) |
